What is a Second Line?

A funeral Second Line Parade is a New Orleans tradition that involves a procession of mourners and community members that follows a jazz band and the deceased’s family, usually from the funeral to the burial service. The parade is a celebration of the life of the deceased. Second lining has been called “the quintessential New Orleans art form – a jazz funeral without a body.” Historically, the New Orleans community began second lines in the mid-1800s as neighborhood celebrations to honor members who died in their community.  During Mark’s funeral Second Line parade you will hear a Second Line Band (The Jaywalkers) start with dirges to mourn our loss and end with upbeat songs to celebrate Mark’s life.  Prayers will start the parade and Mark’s ashes will be on a float during the parade.

What is a Repast?

A repast follows a funeral/memorial service. A repast, or reception, usually includes refreshments of some sort that are shared by the family with attending mourners.  Mark’s Repast will have New Orleans traditional hors d’oeuvres and traditional New Orleans cakes and sweets.  Champagne will be served.
